Our highly regarded flagship community-based learning programme.
A full-time option that nurtures independence, enriches the lives, continues the education, and builds the futures of our young people. &

There are spaces on our programmes for a September 2022 start.
Anyone with an interest for future years is also very welcome.
Please feel free to share this information with anyone who is interested.

There will also be an introduction to the halow project, a Surrey-based charity, and some of the other things that we do.

We will be holding the information evening on Zoom this year. Please let us know if you need any support with this.

We expect the evening to go something like this:

  • Our halow video
  • halow and Building Futures by Emily Marbow - Building Futures Manager.
  • Emily Marbrow and Graham O'Conner Director of halow project & for Q &A – please ask any questions on the chat function during the evening. A halow colleague will then ask Emily and Graham the questions.

A little bit about

We were founded in 2006 by the parents of five young people with a learning disability, and all of our services have been established to try and meet the unmet needs of the now 200+ young people we support. This is particularly true with our learning programmes, which recognise the fact that many young people with learning disabilities leave formal education with further unfulfilled potential for further learning about the next steps in their life and how they can build their skills to get there.
For example, work or immediate further independence may not be an option for some young people so they need other means of learning new things, building their confidence, gaining new skills and challenging themselves, to aid their growth and development and prevent them from becoming socially isolated…

A little bit more about halow Building Futures

Now in its twelfth year, Building Futures is a full-time option that runs four days per week. This is so that young people can continue something else they may already have established or want to pursue on a fifth day of the week, should they choose to. The halow buddy service can also provide 1:1 support on the fifth day. As a highly person-centred programme, young people can join in the year group that most suits their development.

In recent years we have successfully expanded from a single year option to three progressive year groups, and clear funding streams through both adult social care and SEND education (maintaining any EHCP).

Our programme is led by the goals of the young people, so no two-year groups are ever the same. Some of the areas we focus on include person-centred planning on future goals, nurtured group work experience sessions, outdoor learning, relationships, healthy living, and exploring the wider world of our community.

Being community-based means we purposefully do not use any one venue. Instead, each programme is knitted into the fabric of Guildford, using local venues and partnerships. We also do not use our own transport, so using local public transport together and walking together becomes part of our programme. This means everyone can develop their independence skills far more frequently.

The programme runs for 49 weeks of the year following the Surrey term dates, and with 10 weeks of optional holiday activities included within this.

There is of course far more to tell you!

We would appreciate knowing who is joining us, so please email graham.o'connor@halowproject.org.uk to confirm your attendance by Thursday 4th November.

We look forward to welcoming you on & Tuesday 9th November, at 6.15-7.00pm

Thank you
