halow relies on its team of volunteers who build relationships with the young people we support to engage them in a wide range of activities. We treat our volunteers with the utmost respect as they are valued members of our team and play a critical role to our success and future.
There is no minimum time constraint, all we ask is a commitment from volunteers. So, whether you can help once a week, once a month or three times a year, volunteers are essential to us.
For ease we categorise our volunteering needs in four ways:
Although our offices are based in Guildford, we welcome volunteers from various places, as opportunities for their support arise all over Surrey. They are not expected to come to us with any previous experience; all we ask for is commitment and a willingness to work with our young people.
Our volunteers enjoy the fun of our events and can gain valuable work experience whilst enjoying giving something back to the community, taking on new challenges and sharing their skills to help others. Other benefits include:
“I have been a Volunteer for almost six years. Started on social side meeting young people at Friday Youth Club and bowling. A good introduction to halow with lots of staff support and an excellent way of meeting the young people who all have different learning disabilities. Supporting the Social group meant that although I was helping young people to attend and enjoy events, I was also able to attend and enjoy events. I then started to help at fundraising events and then with Building Futures. At all events I felt supported by halow staff and have had an enjoyable time with the young people. It’s been a real pleasure and joy seeing how young people have grown over the years and become more independent. I get as much from halow as I give – always supported by staff and young people."
"I find working with the young people so rewarding and have enjoyed getting to know them all. I feel I have built up a good relationship with them and the staff, it's like being part of an extended family” Volunteer
