The halow project were delighted to welcome Rob Wilson MP, Minister for Civil Society last week. His visit included a trip to see the Building Futures programme and the opportunity to meet some of the young people. The Building Futures Programme offers the young people the opportunity to explore their talents and strengths, experience the community and draw up a Person Centred Plan outlining their life goals which they can then take forward, with support. The Minister took time to talk to the young people and find out about a project they had been working on that day – planning their summer activities. The young people were very excited to meet such an important person and were thrilled to present what they had been discussing earlier in the day. Alex, a halow young person said “Very exciting to meet Rob today and tell him about halow”.

The Minister talked to staff about how government initiatives such as the fundraising regulations, volunteering initiative and National Citizen Service (NCS) had help the charity. “Employee volunteering when flexibly delivered by companies has been very helpful to the charity, providing skills, resources and donations to support our work. For the last few years we have also been delighted to work with groups of young people from NCS who have come to learn about our work, put on events for our young people and raise much needed funds.” Ann Kenney, Head of Business Support and Development explained.

The Minister also took the opportunity to speak to one of our fantastic volunteers, Jane Ellis to find out about her volunteering role at the charity. “I have been volunteering with halow for a number of years and working with the young people is truly wonderful. To see the progress they make in this programme is staggering and extremely rewarding”
