Karting Challenge Raises £16,000

Richard Nelson
  • Solo rider Howard Kayman raised over £2700 as a solo rider!

The twentieth Johnny Herbert Karting Challenge took place on the 7th December 2015 at the UK's biggest indoor karting venue, Capital Karts in Barking, Essex.

For twenty years, Johnny has held this annual event to raise funds for a charity – this year, it was the halow project.

25 Teams of over 130 drivers battled it out in a three hour endurance race on this huge indoor circuit that can see lap times of less than 70 seconds.

Johnny was joined by halow Patron, Damon Hill OBE, David & Sam Brabham, Freddie Hunt and many more motor racing stars, celebrities and karting enthusiasts.

First past the chequered flag after a highly competitive three hours of action was The BT Motorsport Team headed by Bobby Thompson with team mates, Danny Wood, Reece Wade, Tom Jackson, Laura Tillet and Connor Hall, they also set the fastest time of the event with a lap time of just 69.082 seconds.

2nd place (for the 2nd year running!) went to driver, Howard Kayman (pictured above) who was racing solo to specifically raise funds for halow. He raised an incredible £2,700 and in so doing will directly help young people with a learning disability – Huge thanks Howard!

3rd place on the podium went to ‘The 2 Johnny's’ Team so called as the two team leads were Johnny Herbert & Johnny Mowlem, very ably assisted by sister racers Tiffany Chittenden and Tamsin Germain and young racing stars Will Shaw and Conner Mills.

In all, the halow project will benefit by some £16,000 thanks to the generosity of the drivers and visitors to the event.

Funds were boosted by items donated to the trackside auction which followed the race and a raffle which had an electric Razor Crazy Kart as first prize, which attracted a lot of interest.

We would like to thank everyone who took part in the race and helped on the day. Thanks of course go to Johnny Herbert and Roy Craig who did a fantastic job in organising the event.
