The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is launching data protection into the 21st century, ensuring that your information is kept safer than ever. GDPR has been remodelled for the security of individuals information in the digital age, by the 25th May GDPR compliance will be enforced nationwide.
You’ll have heard a lot about it, but what does it mean about your contact with halow? We’re here to set things straight:
Why the change?
The last time GDPR had an update was in 1995, and as we all know a lot has changed in the last 23 years! We’re in a digital age, with easy access to a world of information at our fingertips.
Our technological advancements mean data protection online isn’t as strictly regimented as it should be, and information gathered from the internet also needs to be regulated. GDPR update does just this, so you have the peace of mind your information is safe online and only used when you specify.
Imagine an inbox clear of marketing emails from companies you’ve never signed up for! No spam phone calls asking if you’ve been in an accident and less junk mail through the letterbox each morning.
What do I have to do?
The reason you’ll have heard so much about GDPR already is because companies need to ask your permission to hold and use your details. From your favourite online shop to your hairdressers, if they use your information for marketing or updates they need you to ‘opt-in.’ This means that unless you explicitly say yes to every form of marketing communication they would like to send you, they legally are no longer able to send you those communications.
That sounds great!
It is- but it means any updates and news you enjoy receiving such as our Spotlight magazine, our e-newsletter or our volunteering opportunities will automatically stop being sent to you unless you say ‘yes please’ by the 25th May 2018.
