The halow250 bike ride has had a fantastic first day of cycling, covering 86 miles from The Kings Head in Roehampton to the Peter Ashley Activity Centre in Portsmouth.

Patron of halow project Damon Hill was leading the pack of 110 cyclists as they took on the challenge of riding 250 miles to raise vital funds to keep our services going to make sure young people have the support, care and direction they need to live life to the full.

Setting off from the start line this morning were two inspirational parents of young people with a learning disability, Andy Dore and David Neal-Smith.  Andy’s son, Charlie enjoys attending halow’s social activities, including bowling and disco evenings. Attending social activities helps Charlie and other young people with a learning disability to grow in confidence and combat social isolation.

After a hearty breakfast, courtesy of main sponsor Young’s, at the Kings Head the peloton including various corporate teams (Young’s, Arrow Shipping, Cheevers Howard, Sykes and Orchard Pig) set of towards Portsmouth.  All of the 110 riders enjoyed riding through the beautiful South Downs, stopping briefly at Fernhurst Cricket Club to enjoy sausage rolls and sweet treats thanks to halow supporters.  After a refreshing cup of tea and a snack the riders pushed off for the finish line at Portsmouth.

At around 5pm the halow250 riders were welcomed to the Orchard Pig drinks reception at the Peter Ashley Activity Centre  to toast their first day’s cycling.  After this it was time to head towards the ferry where they were able to settle down for the night, ready to face the challenges of cycling in France, including riding on the other side of the road!

The riders have already raised over £60,000! An incredible amount of money so far! It’s not too late to donate to help them achieve the target of £70,000 – click the link   http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/halow250.2017
